Young, Fab & Swanky How I Saved $136 on The YFB Kulani Ombre Skirt

YFB
Young Fabulous & Broke $176

Skirt: Young Fabulous & Broke, Marshalls, $40

I'm a devoted fan of the "effortlessly chic" brand, Young Fabulous & Broke. As a lover of all things boho-chic, and as a brand loyalist, I can boast that I own quite a few YFB pieces.

I have purchased a few of my breezy, "Cali-esqe" Young Fabulous & Broke pieces straight from their website, however, my favorites are purchased at a fraction of the price from discount retailers.

Marshalls, and Saks Off Fifth are my most favored go-to stores for YBF garb. This summer, I was lucky enough to find two brand new (original price tags still intact) YBF pieces at The Buffalo Exchange, here in Houston.

I'm pictured above in my newest Young Fabulous & Broke skirt. I was delighted to catch this skirt at Marshalls, at a highly discounted price. $40, to be exact! As I've previously mentioned, I consider shopping a recreational sport. Yes, I do. Therefore, when I happen upon a deal, I'm eager to come home and scour the Internet to compare prices, and discover just how much I've saved. I danced all around my living room when I came home and discovered that the skirt was currently online priced at $176!! That's a savings of $136!! I WIN!

At last check, the skirt is still listed at $176. Click here  to see for yourself. As the self-proclaimed Swanky Budgeteer, I am proud to say, I'm swanky without breaking the banky  bank.

Shopping for the Family: Children's Edition

Polo Dress: Macy's: $16
Ugg Boots: $61
Bracelets: Jewelriare

I consider shopping to be my most favored pleasurable pastime. A sport, fun and games, entertainment, exercise! I deem myself The MVP of "Balling on a Budget", aka The Swanky Budgeteer.
Friends, family and even strangers have always questioned where I shop, what I pay, and some are even bold enough to ask how I can afford to shop at high-end department stores on a Domestic Engineer's budget. RUDE! However unrefined and invasive the inquires I'm always willing to share my shopping secrets. Below I reveal my How-To Guide.

Swanky Budgeteer Secret: I prefer to save money on clothing, so that we can splurge in other aspects of our lives, like investing in our home, and several vacations throughout the year.
On Monday, I was featured as a special guest on the MJWJ Global Radio Network. On the show, I shared my secrets to budget shopping for children. In today's post, I'll share with you my secrets and strategies for shopping for the family, particularly children, and saving.

By following my tips and guidelines, you will come to understand that there's no need to spend a fortune, not even in high-end department stores, or on name-brand clothing.
Son: Target Shirt, $9.99
Abercrombie Kids Jeans, $19.99
Me: Top, Nordstrom Rack $9.99
Jeans, Abercrombie, $30
Daughter: Romper, Gap Kids $9.99
Sandals, $14.99 Children's Place
Purse,  $1, Thrifted

1. Plan shopping trips beforehand. I check all of my favorite stores online for coupons, and current deals. I admit, I do not care for clipping coupons, therefore, I use the  Coupon Sherpa app. Coupon Sherpa stores a myriad of up-to-date coupons from major retailers and restaurants. I simply search the app for my favorite stores and pull up the coupons for the cashier to scan off of your phone. Last week, I used the app and saved $20 on a $60 purchase at J.C. Penney using Coupon Sherpa, and I saved $30 on a $90 purchase at Kohl's! At Kohl's I was allowed to combine my the coupons on my phone with their in-store coupons. SCORE! Do not hesitate to ask the salesperson if the store is offering coupons and other savings.

By using the World Wide Web to search and strategize, I am cognizant of any specials and deals beforehand. I check my email every single day to find special deals and offers from  the stores I shop most. I constantly receive deals from Gap (click this link for the Gap's birthday coupon. $45 off of $100). SCORE! I'm on the email list for several stores that send weekly offers. My favorites? J.Crew/CrewCutsabercrombie kidsGap/Gap Kids/Baby GapRalph Lauren (click this link for their summer sale. Up to 70% off).

2. Don't be afraid to shop at  Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdales, and Neiman Marcus. I find that many are intimidated at the mention of high-end department stores, as they don't know, or believe that these retailers offer amazing deals! They all have discount/clearance  stores: Sakes Fifth Avenue Off 5TH, Nordstrom Rack, Bloomingdales; The Outlet Store, and Neiman Marcus Last Call.

I purchase all of my family's Joe's Jeans and 7 For All Mankind Jeans at Nordstrom Rack and Saks Off 5TH. The toddler size Joe's Jeans are $28 and under at Nordstrom Rack! I've found them as low as $14.99 for my four-year-old daughter. I also purchase my family's shoes from these discount retailers. I've found $30 Nike Basketball shoes for my son at Nordstrom Rack.
This summer, I purchased a nice pair of 7 for All Man Kind jeans for my husband, and clothes for my children, at Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5TH and my total was under $100!

Swanky Budgeteer Secret:The 7 For All Mankind Jeans that I purchased for my husband were originally $172, and they were marked down to $51, then I received an additional 40% off of that with my Saks More Card. Click link to sign up for your own More card. Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5TH is actually my favorite out of the bunch, as I find my greatest savings there.

3. Stock up and shop your favorite children's stores during their best sales, not just the average sales. My favorite time to shop Gap Kids is when they offer an extra 40% off of the sale/clearance price. The last time they had that particular sale, I purchased shirts for my son at $4.99 a piece, and an entire outfit for my daughter for a total of $10. I get such great deals at the Gap. I shop there about 4-5 times a month.

4. Sign up for customer rewards cards at your favorite stores. I have a "More" card for Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th. Each time I use the card,  I receive additional savings on my purchases. I have a Nordstrom Debit Card as well. With this card, I accrue points throughout the year based on spending, discounts on alteration services, and my favorite:  Anniversary Sale Early Access!

The TJX stores (Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Home Goods) now offer a customer rewards card as well. I was given one to put on my key chain, and when I shop there (which is almost once a week), I swipe to receive store rewards, and access to exclusive shopping events, etc.

Swanky Budegeteer Secret: I buy all of my son's Levi's Jeans and Polo shirts from Marshall's. His Levi's are 16.99 there, and the Ralph Lauren Polo shirts are 16.99 there as well!

Swanky Budgeteer Secret: I purchased this pair of Uggs for my daughter at Marshall's for $61.00. The original price was $150! I purchased a pair of Ugg Men's Loafers at Marshall's for my husband for $40. The original price was $120! I do, sometimes purchase my family's Uggs at Nordstrom at full price, but who doesn't love a deal?!

It is my sincere hope that you, as my readers will benefit from my shopping tips. Check back for more tips on shopping and saving! I will update the blog every week for tips on how to shop and save. Please comment, share and enjoy!

Weekend Recap: Family Fun in New Orleans

All smiles with Mr. Kermit Ruffins! He's amazingly talented, and very friendly!

My husband and I love to travel. No matter how near or far we are from Houston, our motto is: Weekends are for leaving Houston. Okay, I just made that up, but now that my husband spends most of the week working, we are now mostly limited to weekend travel for the time being.

We spent our Fourth of July weekend in New Orleans, Louisiana for the Essence Festival. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we decided to return this past weekend with our children. My beautiful cousin, and fellow blogger, Jerrell graciously allowed Calvin and I to use her apartment for the Essence Festival weekend, and when we returned this past weekend, we split our time between her place and Hotel Indigo.

I must admit, I have not always been the biggest fan of New Orleans. After experiencing New Orleans with our close friends,  New Orleans natives ( The Berry Family), I have come to see New Orleans in a whole new light. My biggest mistake in my past travels to New Orleans was centering my visits around The French Quarter. I witnessed frightening fights, and even a shooting just feet away from me on Bourbon Street during my last visit to Mardi Gras in 2013. I had vowed to never return, however, my husband surprised me with tickets to The Essence Festival to see my favorite group, King, and The Legendary Purple One Himself, Prince Rogers Nelson. Cliche', but I had the time of my life, and couldn't wait to get back to The Big Easy!

Many of our foodie and travel adventures are based around restaurants featured on Andrew Zimmern's Bizarre Foods. (I'm a huge fan, and I've never missed an episode.)  As favor would have it, a repeat episode of Andrew Zimmern's visit to New Orleans aired a few days before our family trip to New Orleans. Thanks to this episode, we were reminded that we wanted to visit world famous restaurant, Willie Mae's Scotch House in Treme'. Calvin and I are both huge fans of Kermit Ruffins, so we decided that we would visit his spot, Kermit Ruffins Mother in Law Lounge, also in Treme'.
Anxiously waiting to try Willie Mae's

We were faced with a long line outside of Willie Mae's Scotch House, but the thought of Willie Mae's award-winning fried chicken kept us happily in place. We ordered several dishes in order to try as much as we could in one visit. Three servings of the fried chicken, butter beans and rice, red beans and rice, and more.  The food was absolutely amazing, and exceeded our expectations! We were beyond satisfied, and we will return! We were so full, we almost rescheduled our next stop-a visit to The Audubon Aquarium of the Americas for the next day. After allowing our food to digest, we decided to proceed with our original plan to visit the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas.
Enjoying New Orleans Audubon Aquarium of the Americas
Calvin, the children, and my Mother-in-Law enthralled by the Shark Tank.

My son and I share a love for marine life, so we were both highly enthusiastic about the aquarium visit. We were amazed by every single exhibit. At times, I found myself squealing zealously, and running from one display to another, eager to explore! I literally could not help myself. I especially enjoyed the "Geaux Fish" exhibit, which showcased Louisiana's Sport and Commercial Fishing Industries, and my favorite foods-crab, crawfish and shrimp. The children's favorites were the playful penguins, and the peculiarly fascinating seahorses. We spend a lot of time reading about sea life, and watching National Geographic specials on television, so naturally, we recognized a lot of what we saw there. The entire experience was enjoyable.

Saturday night was extraordinarily electrifying! We are Kermit Ruffins fans, so were thrilled to see him in the flesh, in his own element. When we walked in to Kermit's Treme' Mother-in-Law Lounge, we were welcomed by him, even though he was in the middle of his performance. I was a little shy about walking in, but he motioned for us to come in and enjoy ourselves. We danced, laughed, drank  and savored every note that bounced about the room that night. The most memorable part of the set (for me) was the closing, in which Kermit Ruffins freestyled to the tune of The Isley Brothers' hit, "Between the Sheets. We were impressed, and delighted. After the show, Mr. Ruffins stepped off of the stage, and spoke with us. The first thing he said to me was, "I love your hair".  Calvin and Kermit Ruffins, and I enjoyed a brief conversation, invited us to try his home-made bbq, and he even told us where we could go to continue our fun for the night. He recommended Frenchman St., by the way.  I simply cannot express how entertaining this experience was for us.

Our 10th wedding anniversary is coming up, and in remembrance of our honeymoon, which was spent in New Orleans, we are contemplating another quick getaway to The Big Easy. New memories are created with each visit, and I'm eager to get back and create even more. I've got my heart set on The Ritz-Carlton for our next visit.

The only shopping I did on this trip to New Orleans was at the Buffalo Exchange in the Garden District. I purchased a pair of Abercrombie Jean shorts for $9,
a gray top for $11.50, and a unique pair of pants for $22. Grand total: $42.50
 The Swanky Budgeteer strikes again!

My Kitchen to Yours: Syretta's Stir-Fry

Syretta's Stir-Fry

It's no secret that I love to cook healthy dishes for my family. In fact, it's more of an obsession. I visit the grocery store five days a week. I stay for hours at a time.

I'm thrilled when my family gives my meals their stamp of approval. I came up with this recipe strictly based on the our favorite stir-fry vegetables, and the flavors that we like here in my home. This particular recipe garners a standing ovation at the dinner table each time I serve it.

I only cook my vegetables for a short time, as we like our veggies crisp, as opposed to soggy/soft.
I use all fresh, organic vegetables in my stir-fry. I prefer to use my wok when preparing stir-fry, but don't be discouraged if you don't have one, as I'm certain the taste will be the same.

What you'll need:

  1. To begin, wash all vegetables and meat.
  2. Seed, slice and chop all vegetables. Be sure to keep meat and vegetables separate and to cut on separate surfaces as to avoid cross-contamination.
  3. Add steak to heated wok or pan.
  4. Saute' steak and set aside.
  5. Add more oil to wok/pan, then add and sauté garlic, & after a few mins, add & onion & sauté.
  6. Next, add broccoli, then gradually add all other vegetables
  7. Begin to cook rice in a saucepan. Add a few shakes of soy sauce to rice.
  8. Towards the end, add dried chili pepper ( I cut mine with kitchen scissors prior to adding to stir-fry)
  9. Add cooked meat to the wok with the stir-fry vegetables
  10. Lastly, add Kikkoman Stir-Fry Sauce, (to your taste), Lee Kum Kee Black Bean Sauce, Polar Fish Sauce, and Polar Hoisin Sauce. I only add a few shakes of each. I use this to my taste. Feel free to add as much, or as little as you like.
Tips
  • Allow oil to heat before adding food.
  • Prepare and chop all food before you begin in order to avoid down time while cooking
  • Be sure to constantly stir/toss stir fry to avoid burning
  • Use wooden utensils to cook your stir-fry if possible.
  • Add a few shakes of soy sauce to your rice after cooking, before fluffing.
  • Eyeball all sauces and add to your desired taste
  • Don't overcook your stir-fry
Enjoy this meal, and please give me feedback!
Fresh and delicious!
